Travelling back in time - Revisiting the Ornare Technique

This week I filmed a Live video and took my viewers on a trip back in time as we re-visited an old technique we knew as Ornare back in the early 2000's. I shared about the technique and then a card that I had made in 2004 using the Ornare Technique with a Paper Tole focal image.

You may be wondering why I was re-visiting this old technique???

Well, when I saw the Stitched Greenery Die in the 2021-2022 Annual Catalogue, it straight away reminded me of Ornare and so I went hunting out my old Ornare patterns and card photos. Thankfully I have always taken photos of my projects and as an avid craft "collector" I tend to keep everything.

In the Ornare technique we would use a fine "pricking tool" (paper piercing tool) to follow a pattern and pierce holes through our cardstock to create a lovely design. We would display the Ornare piece with the holes, or textured side, up. We would then use this as a background and add a focal piece, or image to the project. It is a time consuming technique, but the results are so worth the time and patience.

This is one of the cards that I had created in 2004 and is my favourite. How cute are those mice! This one inspired me to create my card on Monday using the Stitched Greenery Dies.

The Stampin' Up!®  Stitched Greenery Die gives a similar look to Ornare, though the "holes" are stitched rather than round.

I used the Free As A Bird stamp set with the Stitched Greenery Die to design a similar card to the one above. What do you think?

Free As A Bird "Ornare-style" card

You may notice that I have displayed the stitched background with the textured side up, just like you would with the Ornare technique. I just love how this card turned out. Not quite Ornare, but a very similar look.

My pretty little blue birds were coloured with Stampin' Blends, as was the background to give a water-coloured look background.

If you would like to see my video of me making this card, a few other original Ornare cards, the tools and technique basics, here is the video:
